India Institute for Disaster Management (IIDM)

 Preface :

A disaster is a natural calamity which can come anytime in any part of the world without any prior indications. A disaster occurs everyday in the world almost every-where. World Health Organisation (WHO) defines disaster as "Any occurrence that causes damage, economic destruction, loss of life and deterioration in health and health service on a scale sufficient to warrant an extra ordinary response from outside the effected community or area".

The record of natural disaster in the recent past shows that spasmodic and half hearted attempts at responding to disaster has only led to confusion adding further to the suffering of the disaster victims. We can not stop disaster to happen but can certainly take some measures to reduce its devastating effects. Disasters can be of various forms such as Earthquake, Floods, Cyclones, Droughts, etc. During such tragedies it is very important to implement a Disaster Management program.

To foster the needs of people it is essential that all agencies and their departments come with their disaster plans under a single umbrella of control and direction. Thereby a proposal to build a Disaster Management Institute (IIDM).

The Basic role of the Institute is to

Þ     Create knowledge through its research activities.

Þ     Disseminate this knowledge through training and education programs.

Þ     Facilitates exchanges of crisis management information, knowledge, and best practice among all sectors.

Þ     Play Active role is responding and co-ordinate for various disasters.

The main aim of the Institute is

ü  To build a knowledge resource on disaster management which will enhance and enrich the academic pursuits of the University

ü  Meet the needs of people and international agencies, both governmental and non-governmental, which    respond to the demands created by disasters.
