Gujarat Earthquake Response
'Art to 'Art

Please join us in a local initiative to help earthquake affected Kutchi artisans rebuild their lives and livelihoods. The textile community of Kutch is seriously disaffected by the January 26th earthquake. These small local industries form the micro economic backbone of most Kutch villages. While It is a daunting and long term task to rebuild communities after such a massive disaster, we believe that small initiatives will add up to make a difference. Following a public meeting in Manly in early March a series of projects was initiated to help earthquake survivors.
One of Gallery and Museum is staging a post earthquake Kutch textile exhibition "Resurgence" in February 2003. Project coordinator Carole Douglas is currently in Kutch to work out the feasibility and logistics of setting up the project from there. The first of a series of major fund raisers is being held in Manly on July 14th. "Curry and Claret" will feature a blend of Gujarati and local foods, entertainment and an auction of artworks. The proceeds from this and other events will go directly to the appointed NGOs for distribution to artisans. A charitable trust will handle the funds with full accountability and public contributions will be fully tax deductible. If you would like further information or be directly involved in this project
(which is not specifically Manly based - the arts community is where the 'art is) please fill in the form provided. The exhibition is one starting point - all ideas are welcome ...the possibilities are limited only by our imaginations... 'Whatever we do might seem insignificant but we still should continue to do 'if. To register your Interest and for further Information contact Carole Douglas: 9949 2600 email: caroled@bigpond.net.au
