He completed his primary and secondary education in Mandavi and Bhuj in Kutchh Province. He came to Mumbai for further education and joined Wilson High School. From his childhood, he had a great love for Sanskrit. He acquired knowledge of Sanskrit in great depth from Shashtri Vishvanath of Mumbai & mastered the language. In 1876, He came in touch with Swami Dayanand Saraswati. He was the first non-Brahmin, who was conferred the prestigious title of "Pandit" by the Pandits of Kashi in 1877. Monier Williams, learned Professor of Sanskrit at oxford university, offered him a job as his assistant in first instance. So shyamji arrived in England in 1879. in 1883. In 1885 he returned to India and enrolled himself as advocate of Mumbai High Court and started his practice.
