He completed his primary and secondary education in Mandavi and Bhuj in Kutchh Province. He came to Mumbai for further education and joined Wilson High School. From his childhood, he had a great love for Sanskrit. He acquired knowledge of Sanskrit in great depth from Shashtri Vishvanath of Mumbai & mastered the language. In 1876, He came in touch with Swami Dayanand Saraswati. He was the first non-Brahmin, who was conferred the prestigious title of "Pandit" by the Pandits of Kashi in 1877. Monier Williams, learned Professor of Sanskrit at oxford university, offered him a job as his assistant in first instance. So shyamji arrived in England in 1879. Along with job, he also joined Balliol College & completed his B A
in 1883. In 1885 he returned to India and enrolled himself as advocate of Mumbai High Court and started his practice.
