World wide Cultivation

Commonly known in various countries like Australia , Africa, Israel , Ivory Coast , Southern and central Arizona, southern New Mexico, West Texas ,south into Mexico etc.. as Cape gum ,Egyptian thorn ,Gum, Arabic tree ,Gum acacia, Gum Arabic , India gum tree ,Bablah pods ,Acacia bambolah , Acacia Arabica, etc.. This plantation is found in most of the dry , sunny and desert areas where water is scarce and no special attention or care can be given. Originally planted in many places for firewood and sand stabilisation they were found to produce prolific crops of seed even during drought

Bark : Phenolic constituents and tannins, quercetin,catechin, gallic acid, catechol, epicatechol, dicatechol, epigallocatechin .

Leaves contain tannins ,carotene ,and vitamin C.

Pods have 41 % tannins.Gum contains polysacch-arides, alcium ,magnesium ,salts of arabic acid, malic acid, L-arabinose, D-galactose, L-rhamnose , oxidative enzymes

Cultivation

Sunny, well-drained soil. Fairly adaptable, can plant in sandy, shallow alkaline soils. Nursery plantings, spaced at 10 x 10 ft, may require watering at first, and protection from grazing animals for 5 years. The tree growth period ranges from 5 years to 10 years for different type of Babul

Reproduction of the plant is either by seeds fallen from the fully grown tree or seed sowed and occasional root sprouts. Many instances seeds half eaten or fallen from the mouth of the animals also grow into plants.                   

Cultivation in Kutch

          Currently 12,973,979 Acres of Land in Kutch is Barren and non-agricultural as per the Government records. Although there are lot of Babul Trees over this land , still lot of land can be used for this cultivation.

It has been found to be the most suitable and excellent species for sand dune stabilization in desert areas. On agricultural farms it forms very effective shelterbelts. Babul tree is highly valued in conservation efforts.
